Meet Sollie

Your advocate

Hi, I’m Sollie. I was first elected to the Mission City Council in November 2017. On Council, I represent Ward 4, the southernmost portion of Mission. I live in Milhaven with my fiancé Dave and our adorable rescue dog Wags.

I’m from Kansas, and grew up in the town next door. After spending several years in Chicago, I moved back to the KC area in 2015. I chose to become a homeowner in Mission because I was drawn to its charming downtown district full of eclectic local businesses, its established neighborhoods and their amazing trees, and of course the friendly people. I feel very lucky to have built a home here, and enjoy giving back.

Throughout my time on Council, I’ve stepped up and led. I’ve served as Chair of the Community Development Committee; Chair of the Finance & Administration Committee; and Vice-Chair of the Finance & Administration Committee. As a member of the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee, I am in touch with the vision and goals of the Mission community. My leadership has also been integral as a member of the Mohawk Park Stakeholder Steering Committee, and as a member of the interview committee to select Mission’s current Chief of Police.

I am passionate about public service and governing. I govern with fidelity to local government best practices, and use my skills as an attorney to advocate for Mission at the regional, state, and national levels. I am currently a member of the Transportation & Infrastructure Services Committee with the National League of Cities and previously served on the Governing Body of the League of Kansas Municipalities. I actively participate in shaping Mission’s State Legislative Priorities each year, which local legislators rely on to best serve Mission.

Environmental sustainability is a common priority for Mission residents, and is an area of opportunity for Mission that happens to align with one of my passions. I have served as Council Liaison to Mission’s Sustainability Commission, and have also dedicated substantial time to committee leadership roles within the metro-wide organization Climate Action KC. On Council, I’ve worked to ensure that sustainability considerations are front of mind when making policy decisions for our city.

I am dedicated to transparency and community participation. I engage with my constituents through regular social media posts and quarterly Ward 4 meetings. I work hard to ensure that my neighbors and Mission residents understand my positions, and am always willing to explain the “why” behind my votes.

Prior to serving on Council, I represented Ward 4 on the city’s Sustainability Commission, served on the Dog Park Task Force, and completed the Mission Police Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy. My community service activities also include fostering rescue pups who are awaiting their forever homes and past membership on the Safehome Board of Directors.

I am a proud graduate of Johnson County public schools, and went on to obtain my B.A. in Sociology (with honors) from Grinnell College and my J.D. (cum laude) from the University of Michigan Law School. Professionally, I work in Lenexa as an in-house attorney for an international company. My educational and professional background has enabled me to gain skills that serve me well in local government: analyzing complex issues, effectively communicating with a variety of stakeholders, and resolving disputes.

I look forward to building a stronger Mission, together. Let’s Meet the Moment.

~ Sollie
